Hurricane / typhoon is a north / south hemisphere thing. They rotate in opposite directions.

Tidal waves are generated in shallow water and result from gravitational interfaces involving sun/moon/tides. Tsunami's are generated by physical disturbances - usually underwater earthquakes.

Edit: Seems the above is not quite accurate. I posted what I think is better info two posts down.

So apparently, “tsunami” translates into English as “harbor wave”. I think I’ll just keep using tidalwave as “tsunami” doesn’t really seem to fit the context it’s most often used.

Oops, I was wrong. It seems Hurricanes are northern hemisphere. Typhoons are the same but the name is used in the northwest pacific. I should have recalled that, as I remember 'typhoon parties when stationed in asia.

It seems cyclones are the ones below the equator.
