Well shoot, I bet I picked up Andromeda subconsciously then. Pretty sure I read thru this thread within the last month.

Earth is uninhabitable and abandoned in the Starfield universe.

Really? When is this mentioned? or it's too much of a spoiler, don't answer please. I don't think I heard this during the tutorial, and there is no opening movie like there is for Fallout games, not that I noticed.

To add on to what Khajiit said, Earth was made uninhabitable a long time before the events of Starfield, so it won't be possible for your character to be from Earth (unless maybe you reeeaaallly stretch the lore, or Bethesda builds upon the lore in some way that you can justify it). You'll find out why Earth had to be abandoned near the end of the main questline. I won't spoil it, but I will say it's actually a unique reason why that isn't something that has been done to death in other fictional media.
There are a lot of homesteads randomly scattered about the Settled Systems, but cities that might make sense for your character's birthplace are New Atlantis, Gagarin, Neon, Akila City, or Londinion.
Thanks for the info Rader. Skye will eventually have more backstory, like where she's from and so on, but it'll take time for us to get there.
There's some resemblance to Mass Effect so far, in the sense we can choose what sort of "job" our people have held in the past, and this means we can pick a smidge of Background during chargen at all. I also noticed pre-written topic responses we can choose as the quest moves forward. Glad this game is open world, of course. Mass Effect is fun, but the lack of exploration (on MY terms or my characters' terms) often made me skip returning to ME in the past, opting for Fallout on my PC instead.
