Yay, 'rocu is back in action! wink.gif

Today I started a new character in New Vegas, I got the idea spontaneously (just as with Billy Bob) and since these sudden ideas are usually a success, I started him immediately. Here is an introduction and just as with Billy Bob, I intend to make him long-lasting.
--
Name: Jackknife
Race: Caucasian
SPECIAL: S7-P4-E6-C6-I4-A6-L7
Tagged skills: Lockpick, Melee, Sneak
Traits: Wild Wasteland

Easy-going & beer-loving, Jackknife is an eccentric drifter, moving all over the wastes, never staying in one place for long. Nobody, except probably himself, knows his real name, and he claims that he earned his awe-inspiring nickname because he killed a deathclaw with just a jackknife. There is another version of this story which differs a bit and goes like that: years ago a man wearing nothing but his pants came running to some town in Utah. An angry deathclaw followed him but town guards quickly killed it. When they wanted to drag the beast away, they noticed a jackknife plunged into its chest and it turned out that it belonged to the almost-naked drifter. The guards couldn’t believe that anyone was crazy enough to attack a deathclaw with nothing but a jackknife and that’s how they started calling him like that. And while Jackknife claims that he was wearing nothing but pants because the deathclaw surprised him while sunbathing, some people claim that he was caught “fornicating” with a wealthy rancher’s daughter and when her father caught them in the act, he released his pet deathclaw, hoping to kill the man who stole her daughter’s … whatever.

Apart from a few minor facts like that he’s afraid of guns, heavily moustached men, women with big chins, and that he dreams to kill another deathclaw with just a jackknife, not much about him is known. But among couriers of the wastes he is quite respected. Because he doesn’t have a place to call home, he doesn’t mind going on long treks just to deliver a pre-war love letter, a piece of scrap metal, a tightly wrapped package, a formula toy car, a dirty rolling pin or anything else that needs to be delivered. How he managed to stay alive, is a mystery but he claims that he’s born under a lucky star. Another thing worth mentioning is that some women of the wastes that crossed his path say that he has a way with words while some of them were more courageous and admitted … whatever.

A few days ago he was offered a job that involves delivering an odd platinum chip to the fabulous New Vegas. Since he hasn’t been to the Mojave yet, Jackknife didn’t think four times before accepting the job and after buying some beer to keep him rehydrated and some bobby pins to search for a hidden treasure (there has to be a treasure in the desert!), he headed west. But what seemed like a simple delivery job, has taken a turn… for the worst.
--
I have yet to decide whether his updates will be snippets or something more, but after an hour of gaming he turned out to be very fun to play because he's different than most of my former NV characters. For instance, the first thing which he did, after the Doc patched him up, was to ask him if he can get a lollipop before leaving. laugh.gif I didn't know that this option exists in the game, it probably has something to do with not meeting the required speech check to ask for medical supplies.

Hey I don't know how it is in your country but in America doctors often offer candy, or some sort of treat to children. So maybe Jack Knife is a child at heart. smile.gif

Joe King went back to the Super Duper Mart and Springvale Elementary (with Marge, in my RP) to organize some things. They are using the Nuka Cola machine inside of SDM to store weapons, ammo, and other items, and returned to Megaton to sell a bunch of items: conductors, cigarette packs, drugs they aren't going to use, etc. They made over 400 caps from this!

Joe also took the landmine mission from Moira Brown. I forgot we can disarm them. huh.gif That'll help.

Just make sure not to get too close to cars in the minefield when you visit it for the 1st time.

About lollipops...doctors don't give them to children here, it's like an unofficial law so it doesn't happen that a kid would get a candy or a lollipop when visiting a doctor because too much sugar isn't good for kids and we already have many over-sized kids. We usually give them some funny stamps (super heroes, animals, etc...) on hands. But in shops it's a habit to have some candies close to a cash register and children can take them.

Haven´t yet made use of the robot companion but I sure need it as it can carry loot for me so I don´t have to walk when I get too greedy... biggrin.gif

I haven't left the DC completely, but it's good to circle between games, to keep things fresh and interesting. smile.gif Do you use any mod that gives you a suite at Tenpenny tower?

---
Sunny Smiles had some troubles with Jackknife because he refused to shoot empty sarsaparilla bottles that she nicely arranged for him to practice shooting. He claimed that he's afraid of guns and doesn't use them. Ever. Eventually he did it, but he came as close as possible to the bottles and shot them, to make sure that he didn't hit anything else by chance.

He also helped her in clearing two nearby water wells of a bunch of little monsters - geckos - but not with her varmint rifle but with a shovel which he bought at Chet's. Later it took him one day to find xander root and broc flower because he sneaked into Trudy's distillery room at night and got drunk from moonshine so he couldn't return to Sunny immediately. He also helped saving Barton's "damsel in distress" but there wasn't any damsel involved, instead Barton wanted to get to the stash at the ridge and needed Jackknife to clear it for him. He punched him with his shovel a few times and eventually Barton surrendered and got friendly. Right now Jackknife is Lvl 2 and just woke up from a good sleep at an abandoned trailer at the foot of the gecko ridge.

Of course smile.gif

Nope, don´t wanna live there. I just conduct business and then I´m off again biggrin.gif

Edit: I have now implemented two new mods and I like them very much so far smile.gif

First one is the one I talked about, the robot companion Gunny. As he can hover and is quite fast he has no trouble following me and he can carry lots of loot, limitless I´m guessing. He can also be stationed anywhere and returned back to his original home so all in all, a companion mod I definitely recommend smile.gif

The other one is just an icon replacer for some of the misc items. Nothing more than that, but it adds some variety when the same icon isn´t there for every misc item smile.gif

Wow, the Gunny mod looks sweet. That would be fun to have one of those guys trailing Mirocu, mirocu.

If I ever mod Fallout (unlikely, unless I get New Vegas for PC), first mod I'm going to try would be some sort of weather mod. One which adds rain. I'm not sure what weather would be like after a nuclear war, but I imagine there would still be rain.

So you won't be traveling the wastes all alone anymore, mirocu - nice, everyone needs some company from time to time. I also like the icon replacer so not everything in PipBoy looks like common junk.

Renee, there are two great weather mods, one for FO3 and one for FNV, the first one is called Enhanced Weather and the second one is Nevada Skies. Both add a lot of features and are fully customizable. I don't use any of them, although I sometimes miss walking in rain, I'm still very satisfied with the vanilla weather.

--

Residents of Goodsprings thought that a courier that was shot in his head and buried alive, will pursue his attackers immediately - but no, this didn't happen, and the courier who called himself Jackknife, seemed satisfied in Goodsprings. At first they didn't trust him completely because some people said that they saw him snatching some maize in front of the general store and some other said they saw him drinking moonshine in Trudy's distillery at night but when he saved a life of one fellow resident, they realized that Jackknife can't be a bad person. When residents were interviewed by a passing reporter, working for radio New Vegas, here's what they said:

Trudy, a local bartender and town's mom:"Oh, he's a bit...unusual, so to speak. But he's friendly and seems harmless, not to mention that he saved one of our villagers from certain death. He has an odd accent and I can't figure out where he hails from but perhaps it's not an accent, you know...perhaps he's just a little bit too lazy to pronounce words as they should be."

Sunny Smiles, a hunter and town's protecor:"He's a funny chap. Seems real friendly to me. He helped me clear nearby water wells but he insisted on using a shovel instead of a rifle which I gave him. But yeah, he's real friendly and learns fast. He definitely didn't deserve to be shot in the head." The reporter got a feeling that Sunny liked him more than she said because she was smiling while being interviewed.

Easy Peter, a town's elder:"He's O.K."

Doc Mitchell, a town's doctor and the person responsible for saving his life:"He's alright, I'd say. His response in a psychology test were average but I'd say that's great after being shot and left for dead. Now I can't say anything more, you understand - medical ethics and such. Try and ask him yourself, he can be found in a trailer behind our saloon. And while you're there, stop at our saloon and have a drink at Trudy's."

Chet, a town's merchant:"It's a real shame that he wasn't interested in any of my great weapons, ammunition or even weapon mods. A real shame because nobody sells them as cheap as me. Instead he bought a shovel but hey, whatever suits him, I say, right? Still, it's a real shame that he didn't even look at all these great weapon mods in my selection. Well, he comes regularly, sometimes buys something to drink or eat, sometimes just some random junk, and hey whatever suits him, I say, but it's a real shame that he didn't bother to look at all these classy weapon mods."

But then one day Jackknife was gone. Trudy used to serve him a breakfast every morning but this morning he didn't show up. Sunny Smiles was used to chat with him about nearby areas and creatures but this morning he didn't show up. Easy Pete was used to have a smoke with him outside the saloon, telling stories about his life as a prospector, but this morning he couldn't share any stories. And Chet finally lost any hope about selling his great weapon mods.

A few miles south of Goodsprings, Jackknife was walking towards Primm. He heard about himself on the local radio, and got scared that his attackers might return and finish the job. Or that his employees might send mercs after him because he didn't complete the delivery. That's why it was better to move on, to Primm, to check in at the local Mojave Express Outpost and tell them about his attack. He never called any place home and Goodsprings was no exception. He never got too attached to people that he met on his travels, and Goodsprings was no exception.

I actually very much prefer roaming around alone. It´s a completely other feeling than if you have someone/something with you. That´s why I´ve never re-recruited Dogmeat or Lucy West, even though Lucy looks stunning in that raider armour I gave her biggrin.gif I´m the friggin Lone Wanderer, not the Social Drooler laugh.gif

I didn't know that Lucy West can be recruited! Wait, I checked, she's not listed among official companions, so it must be a mod, right?

Billy Bob travelled with Paladin Cross & Fawkes (not at the same time) but not for long. He doesn't prefer too much company as well, but he doesn't mind the dog by his side.

--

Speaking of Billy Bob, right now he's in Underworld. He helped slaves from the Temple of the Union take over the Lincoln's memorial and then visited Whintrop in the Underworld and traded some scrap metal for a bottle of Rad-X. Annoying Mr Crowley still wants him to kill some wastelanders but Billy Bob ignores him. He rented a room at Carol's and plans to explore the Mall tomorrow, mainly the super-mutant trenches and the large building to the west where he hasn't been yet.

Did you kill Tenpenny or the ghouls?

I've never done Crowley's quest but I read about it on the Wiki long time ago and it's more than just killings IIRC, in fact he only wants you to kill them as an excuse to get their keys that can unlock some high-tech weapon.

I went up and wasted him and then I did the same to the ghoul in Underworld. Their names put together left me a bad smell and I wanted to get rid of that.

But I never did any of their quests and there are no ghouls in the Tower.

You are correct. I don't want to throw out any spoilers, so I will just say it is one of the few ways to get a certain type of tech without doing the main quest. The other ways are to go to the Old Olney Sewers, or to do the Aiding the Outcasts dlc, or Pitt dlc.

So I´ve been running around with Gunny and he works just fine. I´ve never been able to completely lose him, he always manages to find me and I´ve successfully repaired him once. He does have a weight limit on how much loot he can carry, though he can carry quite a lot still.

Right now I´m in the middle of the map, northern parts, and I´m working my way down to T. Tower to sell loot smile.gif

I fired up FONV for a while tonight, and dusted off Lonesome Dove's game. I left her north of the Helios Power Station. She was fixin' to spy out some supplies that were supposed to have been packed out from there to Camp Forlorn Hope. Only they'd never gotten to the Camp. After huntin' some six-legged varmints in the flats outside of the power station, Dove found that the NCR cowpokes had ambled out of the power station already, on the way to the Camp.

So she tracked 'em east, and eventually came upon their remains. They'd been bushwacked. The outlaws showed themselves soon enough. Legion rascals. Lonesome put 'em six feet under. After packing up the supplies, she mosied on over to Camp Forlon Hope, and turned over the gear to the NCR.

After cleanin' up a few other messes around the Camp, Dove ambled south, with some new cyphers for the Ranger Outposts. On the way along the Colorada River, she came upon some more Legion varmints, and put 'em down. Soon after she heard gunshots, and went to scout out what was going on. She found a Legion patrol bushwacking a gecko. She gave 'em some lead for their trouble, but before she could finish the rascals, another bunch of Legion badmen attacked. These wasn't the normal varmints, but assassins. They was more trouble than boot full of scorpions. But by the end of the day, they'd all said their prayers to whatever dark gods the Legion holds dear.
