I spent a while today getting more familiar with Siggy. It is the first time I have ever handled an AR-15 so there is a bit of a learning curve. It has ambidextrous firing controls, which are nice. But since now I have the option to work with either hand, I have to figure out which feels best to me! I think I like holding the barrel with the left hand and loading magazines with the right better. Same with using my right hand on the charging handle, and releasing magazines with my right finger.

What perplexed me for a long time is a button that sticks out on the right side of the receiver. The manual does not mention it. I found it is a forward bolt assist. Apparently it racks the bolt carrier forward if it gets stuck. Though that does not seem like a great idea if you really have a round fouled in the chamber? I think I am just going to never touch it.

I like it. It is heavier than I expected. That takes some getting used to. And wow, 5.56 ammo is expensive. I bought a 120 rounds for about $60. I think I might go with .223 instead, at least for the range. The shop I bought it from has a range, and they gave me 5 free half hours for buying the Sig.

This is how I do it too with all my guns. I've seen people do it the other way around but it just feels awkward for me, it feels more natural to do it "our" way.

I am not familiar with AR's obviously so I'm not sure what that could be, but if there is simply a case of the carrier not going forward as it should on reload then there should be no risk forcing it as it doesn't engage the firing pin, only the trigger does. But I suggest you just ask the guys at the shop.

Have fun at the range! biggrin.gif

Re: right/left handed configuration
Keep in mind which of your eyes is dominant. Probably don't want to be pulling the trigger with your left hand if your right eye is dominant.

The easist way to reload quickly with an AR is to keep the pistol grip in your primary hand and pull the stock to your shoulder while swapping mags with your off hand, that way you are ready to fire again as soon as your mag is in and your barrel is always pointed downrange. Most ranges prefer you to use this method that way your barrel isn't pointed at their roof or support beams if outdoors.

The forward assist is for when you've been out for a while (such as a range session where you fire a large number of rounds) and your chamber is dirty so a round fails to fully chamber. You slap the forward assist to correct this and you can keep firing. Keep in mind that the AR was designed for militaries and then only later produced in semi auto for civilians. A situation where you fire hundreds of rounds in multiple engagements without cleaning is very possible in a military setting. For civilians without automatic versions, it is still useful since the bolt handle doesn't rebound.

For instance on an AK the charging handle moves back and forth when firing, put simply it is a rebounding charging handle. It is common practice to give the handle a slap if a round only feeds partially because of a dirty bolt or chamber. Without a forward assist, this is not possible with a rifle that doesn't use a rebounding charging handle, meaning you'd have to pull back the bolt and eject the rpund that didn't feed fully and hope the next round doesn't do the same thing.

It's a good design, if not a bit overcomplicated.

Just finished firing my .44 and .357 Magnums. My target a cheese ball container filled with water, end result= one dead former cheese ball container biggrin.gif. I REALLY love my Derringer, though tricky to aim with that second barrel it's still a nice shooting little handgun happy.gif.

Alright it's thinking time. At my local gun shop they have a used S&W 500 for $1040.00 and I need a little over $350.00 to put in layaway. IF I can sell my .44 Magnum for about 350.00-400.00. and make payments for three months of 160.00 I should be able to buy it and still be able to pay my bills. Now my question is should I do it or hang on to my .44?

Didn't you just get the .44, and as a gift also?

Yeah I did. Again a lot really depends on how much I can get for it to get that 500, if the price is right I'll go through with it, if not I'll just hang on to the .44 mag. BUT if I do get that S&W 500---I'll never buy another handgun ever again cause that's top tier right there.

Well, Khajiit is really a bad person to be answering this because he's so damn practical! This one would say that as long as he had a functioning gun, he sees no reason to get another. But you are a collector so Khajiit is sure you are looking at it from a different perspective!

Honestly? The 500 S&W is a neat novelty gun but you will probably regret buying it. The ammunition is expensive and the recoil is brutal. It just isn't a fun gun to shoot IMO.

I'd keep the .44 personally.

This reminds Khajiit; he needs more .38 rounds!

But I agree. The 500 seems more like a gimmick than a practical or even a fun gun. I would rather keep the .44 myself, especially since it's a gift.

This one would love a new 12 gauge. Ooh! Maybe one with the shortest legal barrel for better maneuverability in tight spaces.

Ha no no, just for home defense. Khajiit has a double barrel 3 inch magnum 20 gauge but this one would prefer a 12 guage with a tube for more shots before reload.
