He is absolutely one of the most underrated drummers of all time... All of the drum duet things he did with Chester Thompson on the Genesis or solo tours were brilliant...Sooo brilliant... I love Genesis... Check out Duke's Travels and Duke's End for more Phil Drummy goodyness... Cheers for the promotion Athynae... ... Now if I can remember what it was for...*Scratches head*... ...

Of the post-Hackett Genesis albums, Duke is my favorite. I always end up air-drumming to "Behind the Lines." I'm also quite partial to the videos I've seen from the Trick of the Tail tour, when the touring drummer was Bill Bruford. It's a chance to see two of the greatest progressive rock drummers on the same stage. Of course, Chester's a great drummer in his own right. Anyone good enough to play with Frank Zappa and the Mothers has to be. Take this song here, f'rinstance. This post has been edited by bbqplatypus: Feb 3 2012, 10:21 PM

All day that day. Today: Listening to Old Man Pie, Phil Thompson (Organized Chaos), Karen Stevers (Funeral Mute), and Souljourners (Mind Control) Phil Thompson is from the southern end of McB's neck of the world. This post has been edited by mALX: Feb 3 2012, 11:41 PM

Duke is my favourite album of all time...I love it!!...Brilliant album from start to finish...I truly believe that the three of them were at the height of their powers there...And then they...Were never quite as good for me...I do love the post Duke albums with differing degrees, but Duke is the absolute tops... Cul-De-Sac...Ooof!!... ... Never been a big Zappa fan...Sometimes seems like noodling for it's own sake...But I can definately see how he (Chester) wound up in Genesis...I know it was Phil's love of Weather Report really, but that song you linked was definately early Genesissy... ...Chester Thompson rocks!!!... Always prefer Alan White in Yes to Bruford anyways... ... Will check out Phil Thompson mALX...I think my step-dad likes him... ...I think...It may be someone else though... ... Phil Thompson's music is Fractal, if that is what your step-dad likes. Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention? ROFL !! Brown Shoes Don't Make It !!!! ROFL !! He got into a gross-out concert with Ozzie and someone else - anyway, he crapped on the stage (his hairy butt was uglier than the turd, and almost uglier than his face) - and then proceeded to eat the turd. Needless to say, everyone was pretty grossed out. This post has been edited by mALX: Feb 4 2012, 09:11 AM

Needless to say, everyone was pretty grossed out. This story is actually apocryphal. To quote the man himself on the matter: "I never took a s*** on stage, and the closest I ever came to eating s*** anywhere was at a Holiday Inn buffet in Fayetteville, North Carolina, in 1973." While I'm not a complete fanatic (I find some of his stuff to be off-putting), I've liked Zappa ever since I listened to Roxy & Elsewhere. The musicianship on display there is just incredible. It doesn't really bother me, either, because I'm predisposed to like jazz fusiony-type stuff. I think the humor buoys it and prevents it from becoming bloated. And frankly, even if he did nothing in his entire career other than "Peaches en Regalia" (or "Watermelon in Easter Hay"), he'd still be worth remembering. And as for Bill Bruford, Alan White is a great drummer, but I tend to prefer their stuff with Bruford. Though a case can be made that he was a better drummer for King Crimson than he was a drummer for Yes. This post has been edited by bbqplatypus: Feb 4 2012, 03:51 PM

Next thing you know someone will debunk the story of Ozzie biting the head off a bat !! ROFL !!!
