4 Mr. Rattler

“Have you seen that dirty man in our tower? Who could let such a disgusting rat in?”

“I saw him, and he’s horrid! Does he even bathe? Filthy animal! He looks more vicious than a vicious dog! We’ll have to talk to chief Gustavo about that!”

Rattler’s arrival stirred up unrest among snobby residents of Tenpenny Tower – none of them understood what was this foul-smelling, greasy-haired, psycho-looking wastelander doing amongst them?!
But when news about ghouls that wanted to move to Tenpenny Tower being exterminated thanks to the dirty wastelander, they began to revere him.

“Would you like some more whiskey oh, Mr. Rattler?”

“Oh it’s you Mr. Rattler. Such a pleasure. If it weren’t for you, we’d all be dead by now.”

“Mr. Rattler, care to join me for dinner?”

Their reactions amused Rattler but he couldn’t care less about them. He didn’t kill ghouls out of the kindness of his heart but because he simply felt like killing some ghouls and Chief Gustavo offered quite some caps as a reward. But the real reason behind his arrival to Tenpenny Tower was strictly business – he came for Susan Lancaster to enslave her again. She’s been enslaved before but managed to slit a throat of her captor and escape from Paradise Falls. She found safe shelter at Tenpenny Tower where she’s been working as a whore. More professional than Cherry but a whore nonetheless. She charged Rattler one hundred caps for her services but while counting her payment, he hit her with Mesmetron and while Susan was completely obedient, he put a slave collar around her neck, tightening it hard, barely allowing her to breathe. Then he took all her bed-earned caps, made her strip to her underwear and with some friendly words about her head going to explode soon unless she runs, sent her back to Paradise Falls.

Satisfied, Rattler grabbed some more whiskey bottles from Susan’s room and left Tenpenny Tower, heading back to the slavers compound as well.

First impressions are often accurate - so it was with the residents of Tenpenny Tower. Poor Susan - working girl can't even make a living without getting enslaved. . . again.

I know right? Such a creepy, awful demon that guy is. I love the part when the residents all do an about-face though, treating him with respect, just like the dimwitted tower-dwellers they are.

Just like Susan, today's story introduces another character to be sympathized with...

5 A bumblebee

“Come with me, Bumble, and I’ll take ya on an adventure of your life. It’ll be…unf******forgettable.”

Bumble was only six years old and in her eyes every stranger was kind – even Rattler. Promising to take her on an adventure, the dirty raider lured her out of Little Lamplight where his slaver friend Crazy Minnie was waiting in ambush to put an explosive collar around Bumble’s neck.

“Don’t bumble now,” scornfully remarked Rattler as Minnie was tightening the collar. “It might go off and then your adventure will be over.”

Eulogy Jones, the leader of Paradise Falls, already had a buyer for the little girl. Rattler was watching her as she was leaving Little Lamplight with Crazy Minnie holding her hand, knowing that Bumble will curse him soon. If she doesn’t yet know how to curse, she’ll learn. If what he had heard about Bumble’s future owner was true, then the little one won’t live long. Not that he cared.

Rattler’s deeds didn’t go unnoticed at Paradise Falls and if most slavers steered clear of him before, they now considered him a living legend. The pirate of the wastes, the ultimate defiler. Not only was he able to enslave some of the most wanted people of the Capital Wasteland, he had no qualms about enslaving children, had left a horde of dead Regulators behind him, and had no restraints about eating people – dead or alive.

It was better to be on Rattler’s good side.

To Rattler every living being is just 'meat', and he has no qualms about enslaving anyone.

6 The No Town

By the morning all residents of the Big Town were gone.

Dusty’s corpse was shred to pieces by a ripper that Rattler took from some Outcast he killed earlier.

Flash’s throat was cut and he was lying dead in the town’s club house.

Bittercup was lying in a rusty bathtub, stark naked. And dead.

Kimba faced the same fate, except that she was lying in what used to be a basement of the town’s clinic.

Timebomb was sprawled on an operating table, an expression of agony and pain on his face. Rattler was eating him alive until he couldn’t listen to his shrieks anymore and finished him off.

The only survivor was Pappy. He was running to Paradise Falls, an explosive collar tightly clenched around his neck, allowing him to breathe just barely. “You’re worth 250 caps to me, meat,” Rattler said while putting his collar on. “Better don’t get lost or get any stupid ideas. Else you’ll end up like Timebomb. In my stomach! Grrrr...owl!”

Pappy was running as fast as he could but just as he was about to cross the bridge leading out of the town, he felt pain in his left knee as Rattler hit him with a shotgun. Despite the pain, Pappy stood up but knew that his leg was definitely broken.

“Don’t worry, I won’t kill you,” said Rattler as he was getting closer to Pappy, reloading the shotgun. “I figured you want some company to Paradise Falls, eh? Besides, I’m goin’ to protect you from muties. I don’t want my 250 caps to die on the way to the paradise. Now get runnin’…”

Many years later, while Pappy was a free man again, he still kept having nightmares about limping to Paradise Falls, with the bloody raider walking right behind, threatening to kill him if he didn’t hurry up. Back then, Pappy thought of intentionally not standing up again so Rattler would shoot him and end the agony but now he was happy he persisted. Though he’s been enslaved for many years, he later managed to find peace in his life. One thing puzzled him, though – in his lifetime he never found out what had happened to Rattler. Some claimed he died but nobody could say for sure. Others said he traveled west and never returned to the Capital Wasteland. There were also stories that he became a leader of some prominent raider faction north in the Commonwealth. “If he’s still alive, he must be pretty damned old by now,” thought Pappy, getting close to sixty himself. “I doubt he’s still around…but maybe he is…maybe the old snake is still rattling somewhere…”

That night he had nightmares again.

Eaten alive by the Rattler! Hmm, does this mean that Rattler's bloody tale is coming to an end? Perhaps because there are no more victims?

I really have nothing new to tell as I just keep on doing what I´m doing; runnin´, gunnin´, shootin´, lootin´ and sellin´.

And Gunny keeps being my trusty robot in arms. I can´t for the life of me remember how I managed without him, he not only helps with the enemies but he also carries so much loot!

That's what I'm up to right now with Major A. Holl. He's in Farragut West Metro, hunting mole rats and ghouls. He's stalking up on a rat right now, smoking a ciggie.

The tunnels look really "smooth" on PC, the game looks really good. On Xbox, the tunnels look a lot grittier, which is also cool in a way.

@SubRosa - Rattler made it to my dreams too but that was when I created him. It wasn't a pleasant dream.

@Acadian - so far he wasn't close to dying so his tale doesn't seem to end that soon. Chances are, though, that he'll depart the Capital Wasteland on his own in the future because he doesn't like staying in one place for too long. We'll see.

7 The game

“Now we’re goin’ to play a game,” said Rattler. Jenny didn’t dare to look him in his dirty face. “Rules of this game are very simple. I’ve played it before with other wastelanders. All of them understood it so you’ll understand it too.” He wiped his mouth on the back of his right hand. “All you need to do…is run! Run! Run! Run!” He went to pick up the minigun which belonged to one of Jenny’s Super Mutant captors. “You’ll run and I’ll come after you. With this,” he said and knocked on the minigun. “If you outrun me…you live. If you don’t…you die. Simple.”

Back when Rattler stormed the ruined church where Jenny was captured by Super Mutants, she thought that the nightmare is over. But when she saw the red bandana on his head, she remembered hearing stories about the Beast from the North as some wastelanders called him – Jenny didn’t believe he really existed but now she doubted no more.

“I’d start running, little one,” grinned Rattler while reloading the minigun. “I’d start running like NOW!” Jenny stood up and began running – she knew it was in vain but it was her last chance. She was never a good runner and after days of being tied up, she barely felt her limbs. Stumbling, she made it out of the church and by the time she made it past a pair of ruined cars outside, she already heard sinister laughter and hurrying footsteps behind her.

She heard the deafening sound as Rattler’s minigun began to sing its deadly song, a moment later she felt unbearable pain in her back, then she fell to her knees and then she didn’t feel anything. Anything at all.

As I've said, Rattler would make a good evil boss. Maybe you could sell him to Bethesda.
