Necroing this thread for those who play Fallout 4.

I guess some of you still do it and if so you've been remiss in your reporting nono.gif
Renee
Yes thanks for this, Crow. šŸ¦… Finally am playing some Fallout 4, finally sort of getting the hang of combat. Just discovered we can bash enemies with the butts of our guns! biggrin.gif

10.30.2287 - day before Halloween. Aren't holidays recognized in this game? Maybe got this confused with Starfield. Anyway, FINALLY my gal Jenn X got a ferking quest done-- she retrieved a locket from USAF for some lady at Abernathy Farm, and also got to Level 4... pwned a bunch of raiders too.

Raiders in the Boston area seem to have appropriate Bahstahhn accents, unlike the wrong Jersey accents of Fallout 3. cool.gif Folks in Maryland do not twalk like they's from Joisey!

Holidays are indeed recognized in Diamond City (Fenway Pahk). Pretty sure that’s the only location though. Also, I think it’s only Halloween and Christmas.

I'll get there eventually! I borked my install when I tried moving it to my new m2 drive and haven't rebuilt it yet.
RaderOfTheLostArk
Can anyone comment on the 10th anniversary update content? I want to get back into Fallout 4 soon to see how that stuff is, and I have had a bit of an itch to play the game again for a while. I want to try survival again, though at least modded so I can save anywhere--because I'm not going to deal with the BS of losing a ton of progress because I wasn't allowed to save for a long time.

Correct, unless some more was added in the 10th anniversary update. It is a nice touch, but would've been nice to have more.
Renee
Shoot that's correct, FO4 came out ten years ago, I'm in the habit of thinking it's "new'.

I think the latest update is just technical stuff; Some stability fixes, etc. I don't see anything about holidays, although " extra content" is mentioned.

My character is still hanging around Abernathy Farm, basking in the glory of completing her first quest: the retrieval of a Silver Locket which belongs to one of the farm hands. Some raiders at a USAF station stole it,which is weird. How would the farmers know which raiders took it?

NEW THINGS I NOTICE

1). Our character's got loads of idle animations; yawning, fidgeting, and so on.

2). -- Xbox controller hotkeys are hugely expanded. Instead of hotkeying just one item per D-pad direction we can put multiple items. So if I press the D-pad once and press A, a cheap 10 mm pistol is equipped. Press it twice now she's got a double-barrel shotgun. 3x = Glow Sighted Light Pipe Pistol, whatever that means.
Basically, the number of items per hotkey seem to be limitless.

Nearly every weapon in the game can be modded and customized to death at a Weapons Workbench. That weapon in particular is the basic Pipe Pistol with a light receiver and glowing iron sights.

There should be Weapon Workbenches at both Sanctuary Hills and Red Rocket - check them out when you are in the area and see what you can customize!
TheCheshireKhajiit
I really like the weapon modding systems in Fallout4 and Starfield.
Renee
That's something I've NEVER messed around with in Fallout3 or New Vegas: workbenches!!!
That's like an entirely new world of these games for me to explore.

10.31.2287 - Halloween šŸŽƒ Although nobody celebrates costumes and candy anymore in Concorde, or anywhere else Jenn is aware of. She only knows the date because her Pip GirlĀ® tells her so.

...and she spends this formerly festive day running atop the Museum of History, trying her best; taking .308 potshots at the giant deathclaw running amok on the streets of Concorde below, while Preston Garvey, on the balcony below the roof, also takes shots with some sort of energy weapon. Jenn X remembers this little town the way it once was: full of pleasant small shops she could drive to, just down the road from her former neighborhood. cool.gif Maybe grab a burger and strawberry milkshake with one of her girlfriends before heading home. She keeps getting flashbacks of memories from her old life, remembering her favorite florist shop and so on, fluorescent lighting, some neon lights for the little corner pub; the very worst thing which she remembers occurring was a fender-bender between a Chryslus and a Ford Kinto (the latter owned by one of her son's teachers). She'd never expected the sounds of gunshots and ricochets would ever reverberate the walls and avenues of this tolerant, quaint little New England burg. sad.gif ...and that SHE and a complete stranger would be causing such mayhem.

...now Concorde is strewn with corpses! Trash and rubble on the streets and in those formerly pleasant establishments. Rusty, ancient vehicles (one of which she and Garvey were able to explode from a safe distance, though this didn't slow the f---king deathclaw at all, even as the Corvega disintigrated right beside the monster.)w

Jenny's got a gun. A new gun, that is: a rifle with a bayonet attached. In previous days, she backtracked to Vault 111 and numerous other locations, looking for fusion cores so she can continue to walk her new power armor all across the map. Wasn't able to find any cores but she finally got this half-decent rifle, which is better for long-range action than her shotgun or pistols.

....but the deathclaw persists on the streets below. Worse, it's learned how to hide its massive self behind buildings and other large objects.

Jenn overheard the red-eyed woman from Boston talking to some Concorde survivors holed up in the museum about her plans to defeat a second deathie; oddly her idea seemed to be to face the damn things head-on, somehow. blink.gif
mirocu
Not sure how it works in Fallout 4 but in 3 the workbenches are indeed quite useful smile.gif
SubRosa
Doesn't she have the minigun from the vertibird on the roof? You can take it, and it will work wonders on the deathclaw.

Workbenches in FO4 are quite useful. The weapon benches allow you to customize pretty much every weapon in the game. You can add parts to do more damage, make them more accurate, shoot faster, convert pistols to rifles, etc... It all depends on the weapons. How much you can do depends on your level in the skill appropriate to working on the weapon in particular. Science is for working on energy weapons, Gun Nut is for working on gunpowder firearms.

The same is the case for the armor bench, except it allows you to modify your pieces of armor.

The chem bench can be used to create all the chems in the game: Rad-X, Stimpacks, etc... The same with grenades and mines, and some other items too. Many item mods also use it as a way to make their items. You literally create them at the Chem Bench.

The cooking "workbenches" can be used to take raw ingredients like mirelurk meat and create meals, which of course do more healing and sometimes give other bonuses above what eating the stuff raw would.

Also all the workbenches in a settlement are linked. You can store all of your junk (and all items really) in any one of the workbenches. When you later use any bench in the settlement, all that stuff will be available for you to use. It is all safe storage, so you won't lose it. That way you don't have to carry it all around with you all the time, or store it in a container, bring it out to craft, and then put it back in the container once more.

Jenn isn't strong enough, she needs ST of 8 to dislodge it from the 'bird, so unless she finds whatever chem or magazine to temporarily boost Strength, her current rifle + Preston's energy gun will have to do

Wearing the suit of powered armor on the roof will set your Strength to 11. I have never had a character unable to pull off the minigun while wearing the armor.
Renee
okay, guess I missed that. Jenn stepped out of her armor (its animation is rather clunky and hard for me to navigate indoors)( so she's now in ordinary clothes. We can try again with PA later.

Jenn levels up to 6. I put a point into Charisma, maybe this opens new dialog options. Perks in this game are weird. Tried to pick Sneak, which requires Agility of 3 and the game won't let me, even though her AG is 7+

I haven’t played F4 in a while, but is it because you have to get the perk that is in the tree before it?

Charisma doesn't open up new dialogue options, unfortunately. It just makes Charisma checks in dialogue easier to succeed with. (You've probably already seen it at least once, but those options will be in yellow, orange, and red colors to indicate progressively difficult checks.)

The dialogue wheel always makes it so that there are 4 choices in dialogue. Which, sure, is good in the sense that the other Bethesda games didn't always allow 4 options of dialogue (when they actually allowed options in dialogue). But the 4 choices aren't always worthwhile or essentially that different. Also, the most annoying part is the 1 or 2 word description, instead of showing the full dialogue. Which is kind of like older Elder Scrolls games. Let me see the whole thing I'm about to say, damn it.

Anyway, as for Sneak, have you picked it already and you are trying to pick it a 2nd time? Or is your character level not high enough? Your attribute (Agility) may be high enough, but you still have to be a high enough character level to pick it again.

Been a while for me too, but I remember being able to pick perks regardless of order, as long as you had the level requirements. The game is not great at signaling which perks you can take again after doing so previously.
Kane
The ranks of a perk have level requirements. I think Sneak 1 requires level 5.
Renee
My character is in Corvega Factory right now and I just figured out how to throw grenades and molotov cocktails, by HOLDING the button for melee. Had to google that for Xbox.

But the unexpected thing is Jenn throws left handed! -- Which means she still holds a gun in her right, but doesn't need to disarm to use a thrown weapon, that is HUGE. I believe this will appear in ESIV too!

....allright, calm down Renee! Easy..... laugh.gif
mirocu
Dual wielding, huh? That's cool smile.gif

Edit for spelling badly tongue.gif
RaderOfTheLostArk
Technically dual wielding, but not really. Thrown projectiles like grenades are just programmed to be left-handed in Fallout 4/76, but there isn't true dual-wielding like Skyrim. And they only appear once you are ready to throw them, unlike Fallout 3 where you have to equip them as if they are a normal weapon.
SubRosa
It has been a common convention for some time in action rpgs like the Mass Effect games. You select a particular type of grenade to be available for throwing. Then at any time you press a specific key and will automatically throw that grenade. This way you do not have to unequip your current weapon and equip a grenade in your hand, as you would in older games like Fallout 3. It just makes things more streamlined.
Renee
A good example of streamlining for sure.

Jenn X is headed to Oberland Station to take down some raiders. On the way there she spied a man in the distance, standing by a campfire. Codsworth made one of his "duh" comments ... like "no [censored] Sherlock" while Jenn equipped her rifle. Would've been probably an instakill, but she decided to hold her fire and approach first instead. She found a nuclear core and so her power armor's back in order. Why not approach first/shoot only if it's a confirmed raider camp?

Welll.... good thing she held back. The man is a father with his daughter. Jenn spoke to the daughter, who apparently lost her mom recently. 😢 Man what a cluster [censored] that would've been.
Kane
You're giving Codsworth way more time than I ever did. I usually opt to take Dogmeat until I hit Diamond City.
Renee
The Dog is Jenn's first choice, problem is he's not immune to bloodbug and bloatfly attacks. In FO3 bloatflies are a joke; but they're a major danger in Boston area.

Jenn just watched Codsworth get bombarded by countless bloatfly goo-packs (whatever their thrown ammo is called) The bot just took them all while Jenn sniped with her rifle from a safe distance.

I hate watching my characters get killed over and over, so until I get good at this game, Codswork it is.

Edit: Found Super Duper Mart. Gosh, ghouls are like the zombies in The Last of Us! Fast, lurking everywhere; including above us. They crawl, sort of "play dead" sometimes, urgh. *shivers* If we see a ghoul lying down we shoot it. Never assume it's totally dead.
mirocu
Ghouls in Fallout 4 can play dead?? blink.gif
Kane
Oh yes. Some of them shamble around, others lie inert on the ground until they hear you. And they are FAST in Fallout 4.

I love the Super Duper Mart on Survival Mode. Guaranteed at least 2-3 legendary ghouls. It's so harrowing.

Most of the bugs outside of Radroaches can be a headache, especially Stingwings. And Radscorpions burrow like Molerats and will burst out of the ground at your feet! ohmy.gif
Renee
QUOTE(mirocu @ Jan 2 2026, 04:35 AM) *

Ghouls in Fallout 4 can play dead?? blink.gif

There's a trend in zombie movies and shows nowadays for FAST-moving zombies. The slow monsters of Night of the Living Dead have been replaced by PelĆ© and David Beckham and other footballers. Not only are they fast, they are very adept at hiding. Had one crawl thru a slotted opening less than half a meter tall above Jenn X yesterday. Dang thing FELL next to her and immediately starts pummeling her! šŸ§ŸšŸ½ā€ā™€ļø oh gosh I shrieked so loud. Took me 3 reloads to figure where it kept coming from and how to kill it, even though ghouls are already supposed to be undead?

And like I said, just because a feral lies on the ground doesn't mean you should assume it's (un)dead.

It's very possible to shoot a ghoul, witness it fall, but then it comes 'back to life', crawling with its arms just like in Walking Dead or Last of Us or 28 Days. panic.gif
mirocu
Goodness me! Fallout 4 ghouls sound like a whole nother level! blink.gif

Oh yes, molerats actually burrowlike moles and jump in our faces if we don't anticipate. So do some mirelurks.Radscorps too? Sheesh. I have a feeling mudcrabs in ES6 will be really, actually tough.

Even if enemies aren't burrowed, they're really good at camoflauge in this game, and this includes raiders too. Raiders no longer always strut about like they own the universe, sometimes they're hiding and really hard to spot.

Deathclaws still jump, really high now. Jenn was on the second storey of a ruined, open-faced building, shooting the deathie from above, thinking she's safe, when the monster simply jumped in front of her and then clawed her like a kitten playing with yarn.

I've seen other enemies jump, too. Saw a raider jump for instance. Maybe he really "fell" off a ledge, not a true jump, but the jumping/landing animations were unmistakable.

Is there a doctor in any house?

Jenn X is really sick, her HP are constantly in the teens no matter what she eats, how many stimpaks she stabs, her health remains like 16/one-hundred something

I have a feeling it's really radiation poisoning; the right half of her health bar is totally red. The heartbeat sound constantly plays in her game. She got caught in a rainstorm a day or two ago and even tho she gobbled Rad-X I have a feeling radiation increases if we walk around in rain, correct? Especially if the rain is sort of yellowish. Blegh.

So the question; where can she find a doc or at least some Radaway?

I'm spoiled by mods, I admit. Not that I cheated a whole lot on PC, but with Console gaming, there are no answers to this unless you know where to go.

Diamond City is an obvious answer, except it's way too far. She'll die long before she gets there; Lexington is about as far as she can go (from Abernathy Farm) without fast-travel.

Graci.
Kane
I'm surprised you didn't find a lot of Radaway; it's pretty common and can usually be found in the first aid kits. There are definitely docs in major settlements who will take care of it, and there is also a traveling doc you can run into. Check with Trudy at Drumlin Diner, or Trashcan Carla. Both are hard to miss when leaving Concord.

Yeah, Deathclaws are way more intimidating in Fallout 4 than in 3/NV. I don't really get when people say it's the other way around--the 3/NV deathclaws benefit from the fact that you can't sprint in those games, but other than that, nah. Plus the Deathclaws in 4 have unique kill animations if they take you down.

Seconded. Also, try to shoot out its legs. Glowing ones tend to be more bullet-spongey, so shooting out its legs will prevent it from attacking you. (I think they also won't use their revival ability on other ghouls, but I can't remember.)

That's odd--you should have found a decent-enough amount of RadAway at this point, like @Kane said. But that is the big difference in the radiation mechanic between 3/NV and 4. In 3/NV, it would eventually lower your SPECIAL stats, but in 4 it decreases your max health. If you really can't loot RadAway (which can also sometimes be found on feral ghouls), Diamond City is your best bet. The doctor's name escapes me at the moment, but he's in what is effectively the center of town.
Renee
We have found Radaway in the past, just haven't saved any. Jenn just eats those on the spot usually; didn't realize how sick we can get in this game if we're not careful. indifferent.gif

Do not recommend consuming them right away. They'll heal more radiation damage than you think, so you should save them until it becomes really necessary to use them. Unlike in 3/NV where the healing from stimpaks and RadAway was a straight number of points based on your character's relevant skills, 4's mechanics work off percentages, starting healing at 20% of your health bar. There is a perk (I think it's just called Medic) that will increase that healing of health/radiation damage to 40%, 60%, 80%, and then I think something special at the final rank.

Good to hear it's not all doom & gloom in 4, that there is some humor left. Honestly I got rather bored with New Vegas due to its lack of humor/ entertainment. A lot of the Fallout 'purists' state New Vegas is the 'last true Fallout game' because Beth's versions aren't 100% serious all the time but whatever. Thanks for asking, varis. Varis means Crow in your language, yes? Or did Googletranslate get that wrong? -- maybe I got your language wrong; I can't remember if you're Swedish, Finnish, or from Norway.

She's mostly sick from radiation poisoning, I think. Because pretty sure rain is radioactive in this game, right everyone? excl.gif She walked in some rain for hours until I realized her Geiger counter was ticking nonstop, then finally she ate some RadX. It was too late for chems at that point though. Funny thing is, I got a mod for Fallout 3 for rain & snow (because DUH... it rains in the DMV!)

Anyway, that FO3 mod has an option for Radioactive Rain but I never ticked that on because isn't there enough which can kill us in these games? So.... maybe if I'd used that option I'd be in the habit of taking Rad-X during rain, but see... mods (AND mod options to make them easier or harder) have made me lazier as a gamer.
