[ot sure what happened in your case, but while it's been some time since I've done it, the tutorial does explain the controls. Maybe you accidentally skipped the rest of the tutorial?

No. nono.gif Stop it. I'm not that much of an idiot, come on now.

All Vasco says is we can adjust those controls individually, or set them all to Max. The bot explains how Eng (Engines) works and how to adjust speed, maybe one other variable, that's it. We're on our own, which is ridiculous. Suppose a prospective Air Force pilot in the real world wants to fly real planes, the way to do it is NOT put them into the cockpit right away, explain some of the controls on the fly as we're about to be attacked in enemy territory. rolleyes.gif I mean, come on!
QUOTE

Vasco tells you at the very beginning how to adjust the power levels to the various systems, and I found it to be a bit “fiddley” at first on an Xbox controller.

No. He tells us we Can adjust them but that's not what I'm talking about. Never does he explain what each control actually does, which is very Un-Bethesda like. In past Beth tutorials, Oblivion thru Skyrim, we learn how to Sneak, how to block, how to jump, et cetera, before we even encounter any enemies on our own. I mean yea, in Skyrim we're under attack right away by a dragon while our hands are literally tied, but the pertinent lessons still occur once we're in Helgen Keep.

[censored] it, might as well Google at this point. Okay, What does the Starfield spaceship Grav drive do?

The Grav Drive, formally known as the Graviton Loop Array, is a module that allows ships to make faster-than-light jumps from one place to another, and also provides ships with artificial gravity. Grav Drives come with different specifications and can be swapped out in Ship Customization.
See more on starfield.fandom.com

There, it's done, bang! Vasco should tell us an abbreviated version of the above info, along with all the other controls. and then we should have a few moments to gently fly the craft on our own, until we maybe get bored, and THEN we get attacked. I should NOT have to turn to search engines or even this forum to learn this stuff.
Renee
I mean, look, maybe all that stuff gets explained after we deal with the Crimson Fleet, if so, I aplologize. But my point is, these lessons should occur before those attacks happen.

Am I making any sense? I suppose the average FPS/Call of Duty gamer's going to go OH COOL, I GET TO FLY ALREADY and then [censored] YEH, COMBAT!

.... but in my case I'm like "whoa, not yet! I don't even know what I'm doing fer crissakes!"

Does that make sense, or am I just way off here?

Starfield is an absurdly ambitious game. It’s so different from anything BGS had done up to that point, and while I think the intro did an admirable job, I think it suffered a bit for the ambitiousness of the game. Game intros have goals that they need to accomplish.

1. Set up the game’s narrative.
2. Introduce the player to the game universe.
3. Familiarize the player with the games main mechanics.
4. Establish the gameplay loop.
5. Hook the player and make them want to keep playing.

Now, with a TES or Fallout game, those goals are easier to achieve. It’s usually just create your character and fight your way through the tutorial section. With Starfield, not only did they have the usual “on foot” mechanics, you also had the flight and flight combat mechanics, as well as navigation, and then you had to tie them all together into the larger narative. The tutorial was never going to be able to be as in depth as it needed to be. I honestly think that, overall, BGS did a decent job of balancing all of these things as best they could, but obviously a bit more attention to the flight systems (the newest mechanics for a BGS game) would have been helpful.

Whoa, whoa, never meant to imply you're an idiot. It's a complicated system that took me a while to get the hang of, too.

It's all good. I guess I just don't remember well how exactly the tutorial worked. Though the more I think about it, the more I seem to remember it being a bit overwhelming at first. I found it difficult to get the hang of the ship controls, though of course that's partially because it's your first ship and as such it sucks at combat. Hell, @Kane mentioned the other day about using the spacebar and I don't remember that being mentioned at all, so they could make a bigger point of these mechanics.

I agree that they should ease you into it more. Maybe have a really weak Crimson Fleet ship attack you first, give you an easy kill, and then the one that was on your tail appears.

I think the ambitiousness is both the boon and bane of Bethesda games. It's awesome that they want to swing for the fences and it does give you a game experience you would never have gotten otherwise. Unfortunately, that also leads to things like cut content (which Skyrim had a ton of, for example) and clunky new gameplay systems.

Hey I need to apologize to most everyone in this thread, and mirocu in the Fallout 4 thread, for my outbursts as of late in these forums. Not that this is an excuse, but I've been suffering mental problem IRL, and should probably be committed at some point.

That's all. Enough off-topic nonsense from me, enjoy your games, folks, while I try to figure my own probs from now on....

Aww, sorry to hear that. Don't apologize. Reach out to us if you need anything.

So what mods are y’all playing with for Starfield. Not really asking about equipment so much as gameplay tweaks, but feel free to include your whole load order if you want.
Kane
I'll share my modlist tonight, it's at or over a hundred I think.

Wait, what? This is a thing?? I don't remember using spacebar in ship combat. Whoa, that might be a gamechanger for some of these tougher ship fights.
Yeah the difference is insane. You lose speed, but it fires your thrusters and you can bank sharply to pursue a ship.

I need to try this, flying was my least favorite thing in Starfield. (loved everything else, except would like to return to some earlier place to explore stuff I missed and can't figure out how to do it).

QUOTE(Renee @ Jan 2 2026, 12:44 PM) *

I give up on flight for now. I hate that feeling like I'm a sucky n00b, and it's not even my fault. We've got like 8 seconds to figure how to fly before gettin attacked, come on now. Before then, the view as we orbit the moon is so peaceful. LOVE IT.

Skye found the hatch to the miner's quarters, found the cutter she dropped, and is now walking all over the moon. She found a few ore deposits a few days ago so.....time to get rich, I hope.

Woo Hoo, what is this about? I didn't get this quest at all, was this just exploring?

I'd be really interested in this too, maybe there will be some mods that make flying the space ship easier for me too. I had no clue from the moment the ship took flight, and it took me over an hour to somehow land it = that happened both times I flew. The rest of the game is Awesome!

So I am on the PC, and in trying to figure out how to fly I went to study the key bindings for the game = has anyone else looked at them? There are like 5 sections of 30 bindings! I don't even have that many keys on my keyboard! Lol. Urgh.

Oh, man! I tried to jump back there to explore it and couldn't; darn it! I had got into the ship by the quest, didn't think I wouldn't be able to come back or I would have explored the place in full first.

Actually there is a quest later that will take you back there, but you can go back any time you want by going to the Narion system in the starmap and then selecting Vectera once you are viewing that solar system. Once you select Vectera simply rotate the planet until you find the Argos Extractors site and voila!

I'll have to look when I fire Starfield up next time to see all the mod names, but it's a somewhat varied assortment. There is a Doom-related creation which gives you a powerful spacesuit, but can't remember what it's called. There are a couple custom home mods as well, including one called Moonhenge, that are pretty cool as well. Also a UI mod since the vanilla one kinda sucks.

I want to find mods that add new modules you can build in bases. The amount and variety of furniture is actually pretty good and varied, but the actual buildings are quite lacking, IMO. There are also some POI revamp mods I'm looking to add as well, though I think I have one or two already.

I...uh...that's a lot of mods.

Do any of those fix the lighting issues in hab modules? Ngl, the lighting kind of sucks for some of those. And they have this issue where, if I move a hab, the lighting effect stays in the same exact spot but doesn't move to where I move the hab (don't know if it has been fixed since I was last in the game). I have to delete the hab to fix that problem, which is annoying and sometimes very inconvenient.
Kane
I don't think so; but I also don't use anything except for the habs from the Stroud Premium edition mod. They are soooooo much cleaner and brighter, and more posh looking.

The amount of mods I'm running is pretty minor compared to other games. I just rebuilt Fallout 4 at a little over 400 mods, and my handcrafted Skyrim list officially broke 1000 mods this month.

I think Rader was talking about the settlement habs. I have noticed some weirdness with the lighting in settlements as well.
Kane
Oh. Definitely not then. Andromeda lives on her ship and the only outpost habs she's built were Paradiso cabins on a tropical beach.
RaderOfTheLostArk
Yeah, I meant the base-building, not the shipbuilding. I should've specified. The lack of variety of hab modules for base-building is part of the reason why I looked for player home mods. I also wish we could populate them similar to how we do it for settlements in Fallout 4, so that part of base-building is also disappointing. Hopefully that is something that will be improved in a future update.
Kane
These three in particular are what I tried out:
+Outpost Habs Expanded
-Outpost Habs Expanded - Color Variations
+Paradiso Cabin as Outpost Structure

Otherwise, Andromeda lives on her ship or at the player home on Nesoi (upgraded with mods, of course).
TheCheshireKhajiit
I’m going to have to see which of these have a corresponding mod on XBox. I looked for an additional piercings mod but didn’t see one tongue.gif

That's surprising about the piercings. The one I use doesn't have any requirements.

Yeah idk. I guess no one has thought to bring a mod like it to consoles. I looked up piercings, earrings, jewelry. No dice.

I didn’t see a Legendary weapon/armor effect recycler listed obviously on your list. Do you use something like that?

Starfield Extended - Craftable Quality lets you increase the weapon and outfit tiers from base to superior or anything in between.

Legendary Effect Overhaul lets you craft whatever legendaries you want onto outfits and weapons. It's resource intensive, but you get results like this!

Oh, ho ho! NOW we're talking. Those are also the kind of mods I'm looking for. Found an AA-99 one time with 3 sick legendary effects after a lengthy battle with some Ecliptic...except the damage output was way below what my current AA-99 was and I couldn't improve the quality.

Do you have to research the legendary effects? That would actually be cool, if so. I've researched everything I possibly can, and it's a little disappointing that I can't do it anymore.

I think I have a mod that does the quality crafting. I’m using a mod that adds a device you can build in settlements or ships that lets you remove legendary effects from items. It converts the effects into mods like any other weapon or armor mod that you can then apply to whatever weapon or clothing item you want. Doesn’t require any additional resources. I like it but it could be seen as overpowered by some.
Kane
LEO adds new projects to research at the Research Lab that unlock legendary crafting. At level 105, Andromeda has had them researched for a while!

I live and die by Mod Organizer 2, and all those mods are from Nexus.

My load order is different, that list is the order everything is installed in in MO2. The lower the item on the list; the higher the priority.
