Ah that familiar "SKREEEEEE!" sound from Morrowind. A sound that is, shall we say, the opposite of relaxing?

A sound that as you walked and admired a (at the time) beautiful landscape could strike fear into new players and usher annoyance into the hearts of grizzled vets.

*Wipes tear*

It was a beautiful time.

The problem is that cliff racers would follow for very long distances from a height that didn't trigger combat music.

What could happen, especially around the Ghostgate is that you may run around for long periods not knowing you've unwittingly attracted the attention of 5-6 cliff racers, which is enough to thrash new players. Sometimes more. To make it worse, some of them may be diseased or blighted.
mirocu

Solstheim is arguably the most beautiful place in the game. I loved the snow and introduction of lycanthropy into the game.

Funny part is I was just a kid when it came out and when a buddy told me the details I didn't believe him. I'd already sank hundreds of hours into vanilla Morrowind at that point and it, along with Tribunal, dragged me back in for several hundred more. I love many of the ES games but have yet to feel as engrossed and generally satisfied with an ES game since Morrowind.

Of course these were the days of expansions that were the size of all of the DLC combined in most games for a considerably lower price point.

Some of it is admittedly nostalgia but at the same time, it had a depth that I've never really seen since.

Heh, those things wouldn't stop at fear, they could inspire full blown panic in new players. I'd bet that swarms of cliff racers were responsible for a lot of new players thrashing their mouse button to try and kill them all.

I'm trying to think of more obnoxious annoyances I've come across in videogames, and there really aren't that many. Between the noise they made, the way they'd attack, and the potential for carrying blight or diseases, they almost seem designed to troll the player.

And it makes the references to Saint Jiub in Oblivion one of the things about the game that Morrowind fans could truly appreciate laugh.gif

I could swear on a few occasions I got attacked by a dozen or more of the blasted things. Combine that with their habit of hanging back out of reach letting more arrive and the area could be littered with winged corpses.

Personally I always loved how alien Morrowind was, especially when you got things like the Telvanni mushroom towers, or those weird Netch things. And the city of Vivec was just fantastic, once you figured out how to get around it.

That said, I also love the familiar and comfortable setting of Oblivion. I end up getting a little too relaxed while my characters are travelling, making enemies on the roads far more surprising laugh.gif

Creepy is a good word for it. Like The Gibson House in Minefield. That place is creepy but damn if it doesn't make a good unofficial player home! Just don't make the mistake of putting your excess chems and medicines in the first aid kit. Its haunted! The ghosts of Gibson House like to take out all your chems and meds and replace them with a small sampling of different stuff.
