Went for a walk, barely got back before the battery on my mp3 player ran out.

Now I'm just looking to kill time until lunch.

And the thought occured Mirocu, that with all this necromancy you've been up to, we could do with a Paladin to put a stop to it. I then remembered that while there is one around, he brings along a Wood Elf who shoots necomancers on sight, no questions asked.

Be careful

I've just had a nice graphic reminder of why I'm spending more time here than over at Bethsoft: A Skyrim vs Oblivion thread, in the Oblivion section, my usual hangout over there.

Ugh. I don't really care for vs. Threads. They get heated quickly.
Callidus Thorn
Yeah. Of course, over at Bethsoft there are still some of the Skyrim fans from it's release, the ones who'll blindly defend it to the death, even if they can be proved wrong.

Threads like that are just asking for trouble over there.

I don't see the point in such threads; I enjoy Skyrim more than I enjoy Oblivion, but it doesn't at all undermine my enjoyment of it if I other people prefer Oblivion. Why would it?

True, but I personally think calling threads 'versus' invites antagonism simply because the word 'versus' is an inherently hostile one that implies a set winner. I'm purely theorising here, but I'm fairly confident that a thread called "Skyrim vs Oblivion" would turn hostile a lot quicker than "A Discussion of the Relative Merits of Skyrim and Oblivion".

As long as neither side implies that one game did something better than the other.

Once that happens all bets are off.

And even then, there are no guarantees.

Each game has pros and cons, and even those are relative per each individual. That's the danger of versus threads. It strips opinions and dresses them up as facts.

mirocu, while some may gently jest with you about thread necromancing, I think most of us rather appreciate your unique talent for finding older threads that remain perfectly relevant to this day – in some ways even more so because we can see what folks were saying a few years ago. smile.gif

CT, I hear ya. I know what you mean about vs threads on the OB forums at BethSoft (and the specific active one you’re referring to). I avoid them for a couple reasons:
1. I go to the OB forums to talk about OB, not any of Bethesda’s other fine games (which each have their own subforums). Technically, threads discussing multiple TES games should be in BethSoft’s ‘TES General Discussion’ forum.
2. Those threads never seem to go well over there.
Darkness Eternal
The Bethesda forums were great and fun for the first year, and then people started getting immature and very annoying to the point of pushing your buttons. I actually got eight or nine warnings when the most one can get is four, I believe. And then in the end I got banned. Those forums were crazy and the arguments pointless.

It is a hostile environment. I plan on returning once I move to another country. No way the mods can IP track me there. So I'll start the slow process of becoming a mod there so I can ban Rohugh, Summer and all the other mods and successfully implode the system and unban the just!

Agreed on both points. I don't mind the threads being resurrected at all personally and have found some interesting discussion in them.

On the second point, I agree completely with Colonel Mustard. I think VS threads are programmed to become hostile from the very start. I just don't think much good will come of them. That said I don't exactly have a stance against them being created as long as everyone plays nice, I just have doubts that it will happen.

Well, the Dominion's the white elephant in the room. I'd say somewhere in the Aldmeri territories. Summerset Isle'd make a good one, since the natural sea boundary saves any glaring invisible walls, and Valenwood's probably too heavily forested and wild to be practical. I'd say either the Isle or Elsweyr.

Summoned, I come viking.gif biggrin.gif

And since I'm here...

No doubt TESVI will be yet anoter overblown story of only you can save the world. Since Skyrim sold so well, that'll only reinforce their inclination to widen the target audience.

As you can tell, I'm optimistic kvleft.gif

Yeah, it would be nice to see them tone it down a bit, but then they lose out on "da epicz". That would cost them sales.

In all honesty I doubt they'll even mention the Thalmor, for two reasons:

One: Because everyone's expecting it.

Two: Because it relegates the villains to the almost comical, frothing-at-the-mouth maniac out to destroy the world.

If the enemy behind it all isn't someone you can take seriously it cheapens the whole plot, and the Thalmor idea of destroying the world to remove suffering/purify/whatever the hell else those nuts are about is more than a little ridiculous.
Rohirrim
Good point, erm...y'know, they have essentially used almost all of their plot devices. Daedra, dragons, deities, an OP imp...I dunno now... kvleft.gif

I'd say either the Isle or Elsweyr.

I'd disagree with your reason for ruling out Valenwood. Especially if a lot were to be set up in arboreal cities, which get up and move from time to time.

I don't expect the Dominion to be dealt all at once, so I'd expect Valenwood or Elsweyr as the next, with the resurgent Empire, or something else that will take its place - maybe a republic, with an elected head - pushing the Thalmor back toward the Summerset Isle. That leaves another game in the series to deal with the final offensive into their territory.

I would like to see technology advance a bit, and someone start to understand and reproduce the Dwemer technology - mechanisms powered by magical forces. They've already hinted in that direction, with the Skyrim automata containing soul gems as well as scrap metal and gyros. Since soul gems get used to recharge weapons, it would make sense for them to be used like batteries to power automata, too. Welkynds and varlas would do the same job, but get their magicka from other (geological) sources. Throw in a way to recharge the welkynds and varlas over time at an Ayleid well, and you've got a power economy that fits the lore.

And I also expect a Black Marsh episode some time to fill in the Hist side of the picture. That doesn't have to be part of the Empire/Dominion story, or even run concurrently.

They've still got one or two up their sleeve. For instance:

Did you know that Pelinal Whitestrake was actually a time-travelling robot from the future? Fifth Era I believe.

QUOTE(Rohirrim @ Nov 19 2013, 09:11 PM) *

I'm dubious they'd want to step too far from the Empire, but it could happen.

Black Marsh on the other hand, I really doubt. A place like that is just begging for a hardcore mode, but playing as an Argonian would pretty much negate that.

I think they might jump to the 5th Era, just because they likely have no clue how to resolve the Thalmor satisfactorily, and give us a steampunk TES.

At that point there's time-travel, meaning the possibility of rewriting history and stopping the DWEMER disappearing by moving them forward in time rather than out of the universe. That way they don't majorly screwup the lore, but still are able to bring them back.
