The likelihood of getting stuck in a well in the middle of nowhere is very low, so I'll take my chances with immortality.

Well the chances of gaining immortality are also very low or very high depending on your beliefs.

Exactly. But if it was possible to gain immortality I'd take my chances of falling down a well and getting stuck there for the rest of eternity rather than facing death.

Actually, a form of biological immortality already exists in two forms.

Form one: A species of jellyfish reverts back to a fetal-like stage and effectively regenerates it's cells negating any all aging that has effected it. Scientists have determined this does not effect the length of it's telomeres: the 'bungee cords' that hold chromosomes together and shorten with each cellular replication which is the 'cause' of aging.

There is nothing in your DNA that is coded to grow older and die, as such modern medicine has classified aging as a disease.

Form Two: Lobsters!!

Beleive it or not, lobsters produce an enzyme called 'telomerase' that repairs damages sequences of DNA and do not exhibit signs of senescence; or the typical signs of aging such as set growth limits, loss of fertility, or lowered metabolism.

While not quite 'biologically immortal' they still can die from other natural causes, but can live up too fifty years in the wild. The equivalent for humans would be about a five hundred year lifespan, and entering into the Olymipcs and winning the Gold at four hundred.

QUOTE(Black Hand @ Aug 8 2013, 03:10 PM) *

Smart enough to encode these forms of biological immortality into our own genomes.

If we haven't already.

Based upon statistics of average human lifespan, current medical procedures, et cetera.

We're currently in a timeframe that is unparalleled in human history.

Here is an example of exponential growth. We're very near the top.

I have clear memories of when cell phones were large clunky devices that only the rich could afford. Now I'm accessing the internet with mine.

The equivalent of this would be from going to a society that had calligraphy is the highest level of written technology to having a telegraph in a couple of years.

And each jump we make pushes us higher than ever before.

One hundred fifty years ago, we had none of these things. No Radio waves, no television, no electronic devices, this entire realm of electronic correspondence was silent. Largely unknown, and completely untapped.

Now....you get the idea.

Pretty much. Interrelated technologies can both complement and augment each other.

And believe it or not, the primary catalyst for most of these technologies was War. That horrible, terrible aspect of human nature. The Cold War actually fueled much of the advances we've seen since the sixties. GPS? Guided rocket and deep enemy territory!

I've heard it said that War is the highest expression of human capability, but the lowest expression of human consciousness.

Based on what I've seen, I'm inclined to agree. It demands the totality of our creativity, but is channeled into terrible direction.

Didn't WWII inspire a lot of today's technology such as radars, jeeps, duct tape, etc.

This is why I find war pointless. In the end, neither side wins. Thousands of innocent lives are lost, and countries an governments are left in shambles. Humans are thier own worst enemies. If anything, we'll be the cause of our own extinction.

The US Goverment has lost about 50 nukes, they could be in anyones hands.

Also to become immortal we have to get lobster DNA and jellyfish DNA and then put it into a human then they can be reborn/immortal?

That's how science works right?

Lol. Not quite, we don't have to become sea-faring abominations of our former selves. We can 'imitate' these qualities, or even just draw new genetic traits based upon them that are more suited to our own selves.

Whether we should or could...well..Mary Shelley's Frankenstein was written largely as an embodiment of a fear of the age of rapidly advancing technology.

I also agree with Einstein's observation that our technology has exceeded our humanity. In other words our capabilities has exceeded our accumulated wisdom. There are many ways in which wisdom can be gained, unfortunately it's usually the path of tragedy.

There was actually this scientist that injected spider DNA into a goat embryo. The result? There's goats out there with milk you can soon spider silk from. It's really wierd, but perhaps it is possible to create immortality in humans through science.

The advancement of technology is amazing and as Black Hand noted, is still going strong. Human lifespans are longer due to medical advancements in the last few decades, communication is easier than it has ever been, and weapons techology is advancing at a very fast pace.

Some innovations are good for humanity and some are not. Having superior weaponry is not always bad because it can serve as an effective deterrent to war with the nations that possess them but they can also serve as a way for governments to oppress their own citizens as well as other less powerful nations.

Basically I believe that having a strong and capable military can keep you safe from invasion and can deter wars that might have been started by other nations. The cold war could perhaps have become an actual war had the potential for extreme losses not been present because of the weapons that the nations involved possessed.

*Slams hand on the desk*

I'm a practicing Theravada Buddhist sir! I'm deeply offended!

*Monk whispers in ear*

Oh, sorry. The Venerable Ajahn wishes for me to state that the Hindu and Mahayna perception of Karma is not in line with our concept of it: Kamma. Which is really just the observation of cause and effect, and at it's most mystical concept would be that actions have consequences, not a sentient personal force that makes you stub your toe from some misdeed from a former incarnation.

*Monk whispers again*

The Venerable Ajahn would also like to state that Reincarnation is not a concept endorsed by Therevadin Sects or is otherwise contained within the Pali Canon the original teachings from which all sects of Buddhism are derived.

*Monk whispers some more*

The Venerable Ajahn has pointed out that other people's beliefs and perceptions should not affect my inner peace, especially upon the road while driving and that I owe the Forge-Master an apology for letting irrational anger spill forth. *Sighs* And that I should invite him over for tea, and that my anger is merely my own self recognizing it's own shortcomings.

*Final bout of whisperings.*

Really? Kiln, that hat makes you look fantastic!!
